Taiko body materials…
Every taiko drum body is handcrafted from red oak or ash, but special order taiko drum bodies are available upon request. We have made custom taiko from sustainably harvested exotic woods like purple heart, paduak, maple, and many other types of exotic woods, so if you have an idea for a custom taiko, feel free to ask!
Our taiko bodies…
We hand selected all of the lumber that will become your taiko body to highlight the natural grain of the wood. This gives our taiko a look as if they were carved from a single tree. We reinforce the rims with cross-grain steam bent ash. Every taiko body is made in our Colorado shop with care and precision, so your taiko will last a lifetime.
Texturing patterns…
On the taiko that require texturing, we have developed a custom pattern that removes the higher pitched overtones. Our texturing approach is similar to what you would see in a recording studio to treat a room for specific unwanted frequency resonances.
Selecting the taiko skins….
We only use rawhide that was specifically processed for our taiko. At our shop we inspect the skins for any imperfections that may have passed through the manufacturing process. Every head is hand picked and cut specifically for your taiko.
Heading the taiko…
All of our nagado are headed with a tension that will give your taiko an excellent tone for many years to come.
We hand sew all of our heads around treated solid steel rings.
